A telescopic sight is normally sighted in on a flat range. Gravity acts on a projectile that travels a horizontal trajectory. If your target is higher or lower than you, that same gravity acts differently on the projectile and the result is usually that you shoot slightly too high.
With the cosine value and the measured distance, you calculate the horizontal (flat) distance to your target. If the angle meter shows 87, for example, you multiply the measured distance by 0.87. If you measure 100 meters, you arrive at 87 meters ballistic distance and thus aim slightly lower to compensate for the effect of gravity. Up to 250 meters, this simple calculation gets you to the correct ballistic distance perfectly, but even at greater distances the angle meter proves its worth. Measuring an angle and calculating the cosine yourself are a thing of the past: you read the cosine value directly from the Rome RUAC System angle meter and enter it into your ballistic software for the correct ballistic distance.
