With these lead projectiles, it comes down to two things: consistent dimensions and a hollow point that delivers on impact. Because the lead is relatively soft, the slug opens extremely quickly as soon as it hits its target — and that means virtually all energy is transferred at the point of impact. That same soft lead makes production possible the way Javelin approaches it: not casting, but cold pressing with very tight tolerances. Each specimen comes out of the press identically, which translates to predictable and reliable performance on the range. Flight characteristics have also been considered.
