The classic field spade is without question the most versatile tool for outdoor use—only the machete rivals it. It splits firewood, fells trees, cuts through dense undergrowth, rakes camp fires, serves as a foothold on steep slopes, functions as emergency crowbar and paddle, and far more besides. Compared to the folding spades commonplace today, this design is considerably more robust—which is essential for the above applications. Böker has chosen to execute the Plus Shovel M1874 faithful to the original design of the first German field spade, introduced in 1874 by imperial decree under the designation "portable digging tool for infantry and jäger battalions." The two-part construction of blade and spring is joined by five sturdy rivets, further secured by a 40 mm wide steel band and covers the break-resistant ash wood shaft to roughly midway along its length. This historic design is complex and costly to manufacture, but rewards you with unmatched stability. The M1874 field spade remained in service alongside later models through both world wars. Following historical precedent, the blade edges arrive pre-sharpened rather than honed—digging, splitting firewood and lopping branches are readily possible in this state, but for use as machete or blade you may prefer to finish the edges yourself. Böker has made minimal modifications to the original to create a modern bushcraft tool. Both blade and spring employ a tough, stainless steel alloy used in turbine blades and surgical instruments—delivering high break and shock resistance with easy maintenance sharpening under field conditions. The sheath with two belt loops is fabricated from moisture-resistant, rattan-resistant black nylon with sturdy polymer insert, replacing the higher-maintenance leather of older designs. The Böker Plus Shovel M1874 is essential for all bushcrafters, off-road operators, military equipment collectors and reenactors.
