According to one explanation, the equilateral cross is considered the banner of the Cossacks and the banner of victory. A similar cross was one of the elements in the coat of arms of the founder of the Zaporozhian Sich, Dmytro-Bayda Vyshnevetskyi, Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytskyi, and was also depicted on the flags of various regiments of the Zaporozhian Army.
